Across the North Atlantic in merino wool

12 sailors. 14 days at sea. And two sets of wool clothing for each.

A crew from Hamburgischer Verein Seefahrt has just returned from an adventure of a lifetime across the North Atlantic – and DILLING was on board. In other words, they brought our organic merino wool clothing along for the journey. Lina-Marie was one of the sailors, and here she shares her experiences on board.

Functionality is crucial at sea

The crew took part in the official RORC Transatlantic Race, where the challenge was to be the first to sail from Newport in the US to Cowes in England.

“There wasn’t a single second when we weren’t wearing DILLING clothing,” says Lina-Marie. And with good reason, according to her:

“The weather on the Atlantic sometimes changes hour by hour. Changing clothes can be extremely demanding when the boat is moving in the waves. I think the clothing is ideal for sailing because it adapts to the conditions. On hot days the wool felt like comfortable protection against the sun, and on cold days it worked as a warm base layer.”

They wore merino wool underwear and long-sleeved tops, fleece jackets, and softshell outerwear.

No washing machine – no problem

For good reason, there’s no washing machine on board, says Lina-Marie:

“But that wasn’t an issue. I think the comfort of wearing merino wool for so many days at sea is excellent. We felt fresh and didn’t smell. And you don’t want to feel icky when 12 people are living together in 20 m².”

She and the rest of the crew are now back home – and they finished on the podium as one of the first teams to reach the finish line.

"We had an unforgettable experience, and I’m already looking forward to many more adventures at sea,”
